Fix That Broke Site In an ever changing atmosphere such as the internet it is almost impossible for a normal web master to keep up to date with all the search engine algorithm changes. Once you think you have learned something new and improved that will garner your site better rankings the algorithms change yet again. So what can the normal webmaster do to better his sales? The one thing I seem to see on a lot of on our client`s sites before we start optimizing them is dead or broken links. Broken links will harm your site more then you think. Not only is it unpleasing to the search engine spiders, making them want to leave your site because it gets caught in a dead end link, it is also very annoying to the visitor who may be looking into your site. If you were a buyer looking for a specific product and you finally found it on a site that has broken links throughout would you still want to buy it from them? Someone that can`t even take care of their own website and yet they think you should spend your hard earned money at their site? If the site owner can`t keep up with his own website what`s the chances he will forget to send your order out as well? When you decide that a page needs removed then make sure you remove all in-site links that go to that page. Need to move the page to a new place in the site or just rename the page? Either way you choose whether you are deleting, moving, or renaming you should always include a 301 redirect. Even if you do delete, rename, or move a page different search engines will still have that page held in their cache. This will lead to some unhappy or worse `lost` clients because the search engines may have those pages ranked and when someone does find it and clicks on it they will be taken to a 404 page not found. With the 301 redirect you can safely do whatever you want as the search engine will know that said page has found a new permanent home and will make the changes in it`s cache respectfully all the while it redirect certainly lost traffic back into the site where they needed to be. To use a 301 redirect you first need to download the .htaccess file from the root directory of where your website is found. If, there is no .htaccess then you can create one using notepad or other application. If you are creating a .htaccess do not forget to put the `.` In front of the file name (.htaccess has no extension). Inside the .htaccess file you can add a line such as this: redirect 301 /old/old.htm http://www.you.com/new.htm now let`s break it down to show what each part of this statement does: ? redirect 301 (the instruction that the page has moved) ? /old/old.htm (the original folder path and file name) ? http://www.you.com/new.htm (new path and file name) Using the 301 redirect is the safest way to preserve your website rankings. During the transition and for a couple weeks to come you may see the sites rank fluctuate, this is normal as almost everything you change on a website involves some risk of losing what you have, but if you have to do it this is the safest bet. So just remember even if you are no super SEO genius you can still help your own website out but keeping it up to date and don`t let broken links become a problem for your site. If you have to change a page make sure you change all links to the respected destination before you leave your work area as most people will put off fixing the hyperlinks until it is too late. I hope this helps some webmasters keep the rankings that they have earned and until next time, Happy Searching!
